National GHS Cleaning Chemicals Legislation What is GHS�? The Global Harmonised System (GHS) is internationally used to standardise and harmonise the classification and labelling of chemicals - including cleaning chemicals. When does the GHS� legislation take effect? The laws came into force in most states of Australia on 1st of January 2017. GHS has not been implemented in Victoria, Western Australia or the Australian Capital Territory, however all states and territories recognise and accept GHS labels and safety data sheets. This matter is covered under the Work Health & Safety regulations in all States. Breaches will be handled in the same manner as for other Work Health & Safety matters. What does GHS� mean for you? From 1st of January 2018, all labels on all cleaning chemicals that are sold into childcare centres must have appropriate GHS� pictograms present on the label. All wording on labels must also be compliant with standard GHS hazard and warning statements. This is a regulatory workplace health and safety requirement.
