When set up, the pointer should hang down vertically. To achieve this there are trimming weights on the far ends of the beam arms. In addition, there is a spirit level bubble to confirm that the beam is precisely horizontal. Once set, the pointer will be in the perfect position to precisely measure the mass of an object. To do this, an object is placed onto one pan tipping the balance arm to one side. Then known weights (which come with the set) are placed onto the other pan until the pointer returns back to the vertical position. In addition, children can place different weight combinations onto the balance pans to achieve a perfect balance. A super and invaluable science and maths resource.
